Have you ever found yourself at a dimly lit restaurant in Royal Oak, holding the menu further and fur- ther away until your arm is fully extended, just to read the specials? Maybe you’ve started "scrolling" on your phone by moving the device toward the wall rather than your face.
If this sounds familiar, don’t worry, you aren’t losing your mind, and you certainly aren’t alone. In the eye care world, we affectionately (and sometimes frustratingly) call this "Short Arm Syndrome." Clinically, it’s known as presbyopia, and it’s a natural part of the aging process that hits almost every- one once they cross the threshold of their 40s.
At Michigan Eye Consultants, we believe that growing older shouldn't mean losing your connection to the details that matter, whether that’s a grandchild’s drawing or the fine print on a new contract. Under the guidance of Dr. Kenneth Wong, we’ve created a boutique environment in Madison Heights where we combine high-tech diagnostics with a personalized, friendly touch to help you see clearly again.
To understand presbyopia, think of your eye like a high-end camera. Inside your eye, sitting right be- hind your iris, is a clear lens. When you’re young, this lens is soft, flexible, and elastic. It can easily change its shape to help you focus on things that are far away one second and right in front of your nose the next.
As we blow out more candles on our birthday cakes, that lens begins to lose its "bounce." It becomes stiffer and less flexible. Simultaneously, the tiny muscles in your eye that pull and push on that lens start to lose a bit of their strength.
The result? Your eye can no longer "zoom in" on close-up objects. Instead of the light focusing di- rectly on your retina (the back of the eye that sends images to your brain), the light lands slightly be- hind it. This creates that characteristic blur when you try to read, sew, or look at your smartwatch.

Most people start noticing the symptoms of presbyopia between the ages of 40 and 45. It’s one of those universal human experiences, even if you’ve had perfect 20/20 vision your entire life, presbyopia will likely come knocking.
We see this every day: patients come in frustrated because they feel like their vision "failed" overnight. But the truth is, it’s a gradual shift. You might notice it more when you’re tired, stressed, or trying to read in low light. If you find yourself hunting for the brightest lamp in the room just to read a text message, that’s your eyes telling you they need a little extra help.
While the obvious symptom is blurry near vision, presbyopia can show up in other sneaky ways:
The Arm Extension: You find yourself holding reading material at arm’s length.
Headaches and Eyestrain: After doing close-up work, you feel a dull ache in your temples or a general "heaviness" in your eyes.
Need for Bright Light: You can’t seem to read the mail unless you’re standing directly under a lightbulb.
Transition Trouble: It takes a few seconds for your vision to "reset" when you look up from your book to look across the room.
If these sound like your daily reality, it’s time for a comprehensive eye exam.

The good news? Presbyopia is incredibly manageable. At Michigan Eye Consultants, we don’t believe in a "one-size-fits-all" approach. We take the time to understand your lifestyle, whether you spend eight hours a day on a computer, enjoy golfing at the local clubs, or love knitting, to find the perfect solution.
Gone are the days of the visible line across your glasses that screams "I’m wearing bifocals!" Modern progressive lenses provide a smooth, seamless transition between far, intermediate, and near vision. Our optical boutique in Madison Heights features a curated selection of designer frames so you can look as sharp as you see.
If you prefer not to wear glasses, multifocal contact lenses are a game-changer. These lenses use advanced technology to allow your brain to choose the focus it needs for the distance you’re looking at. They are excellent for active Metro Detroiters who don't want to fumble with "cheaters" at the gym or while driving. Check out our contact lens fitting services to see if these are right for you.

We know that going to the doctor isn't usually on your "Top 10 Fun Things to Do" list. That’s why we’ve worked hard to make our Madison Heights office feel different. We’ve traded the cold, clinical feel for a boutique atmosphere that is warm, inviting, and professional.
When you see Dr. Kenneth Wong, you aren't just another chart number. He prides himself on a personalized, attentive approach. He listens to your concerns and explains the "why" behind your vision changes. Whether you are coming in for a routine check-up or a specific concern like diabetic eye care, you’ll feel heard and cared for.

We want to make sure your visit is as smooth as possible, which includes being transparent about how we handle billing.
Important Note: Michigan Eye Consultants does NOT accept vision insurance (like VSP or Eye- Med).
However, we do accept major commercial medical insurance, Medicare, Medicare Advantage, and select Medicaid plans. Because presbyopia and general eye health fall under medical eye care, your comprehensive exam may be covered by your medical plan. If you have questions about your specific coverage, we encourage you to visit our insurance information page or give us a call. We also offer various payment options to ensure you get the care you need.
Being part of the Madison Heights and Metro Detroit community means we care about our neighbors. We aren't a giant corporate chain; we are a local practice dedicated to helping you live your best life in the city we all love. When you can see the world clearly, you can enjoy everything our community has to offer: from reading the fine print on a locally brewed beer label to navigating the traffic on I-75 with confidence.

Not exactly. While both can make close-up things look blurry, farsightedness is usually related to the shape of your eye and is often something you’ve had since you were younger. Presbyopia, on the other hand, is the natural stiffening of the eye’s lens that happens to pretty much everyone as they get older.
No, not really. Presbyopia is a normal part of aging, so it isn’t something you can stop from hap- pening. The good news is that we can absolutely manage it with the right glasses, contacts, or other vision solutions so it doesn’t slow you down.
Nope. The old-school bifocals with the visible line are just one option, and for many people, they’re not even the best option anymore. Today, progressive lenses and multifocal contact lenses can give you clear vision at different distances while looking and feeling much more natural.
We recommend an annual comprehensive eye exam, especially once you’re in your 40s and start noticing these changes. Regular exams help us keep your prescription up to date and make sure there isn’t anything else affecting your vision or eye health.
If you’re tired of the "short arm" struggle, it’s time to reclaim your vision. Presbyopia is inevitable, but blurry vision is optional.
Let Dr. Kenneth Wong and the team at Michigan Eye Consultants help you find the solution that fits your life. From stylish frames in our boutique to the latest in multifocal contact lens technology, we have everything you need right here in Madison Heights.
